Not only is it good to speak Spanish for travel, but it’s good for emergencies as well. The population of Latinos in North America is growing quickly, and especially if you live in the southern states, you’ll want to be able to communicate.

Primero, es necessario comunicar con frases facil, como “hola” y “Como se dice ____?”

First, it’s necessary to communicate with simple phrases like “hello” and “how do you say____?”

  Preguntas Básicas – Basic Questions
• Como se llama? = what’s your name? (How are you called?)
• Como Estas? = How are you?
• Que Tal? = How’s it going? (colloquial)
• Que pasa? = What’s happening/What’s going on? (Used like “what’s up?”, but can also be used for “whats wrong?”)
• Que pasó? = What happened?
• Donde estamos? = Where are we?
• Quién es? = Who is it?
• Quienes son? = Who are they?

Indicá apuntando tus dedo, y ellos pueden entender. Entendiendo como preguntar “que es eso?” (what is that?) es una habilidad muy importante también.

Indicate pointing your finger and they’ll be able to understand. Understanding how to ask “what is that?” is a very important skill as well.

• Vamanos = Let’s go
• Mira (sounds like Mee dah) = Look!
• Alto! = stop (not Alto as in high, from the German “halt”. You can also use ‘Pare’ [pah ray])

• Tengo = I have
• No Tengo = I don’t have
• Tenga = He/she has
• No tenga = he or she doesn’t have
• Tengan = They have
• No Tengan = They don’t have
• Bastante = Enough
• Demasiado = Too much
• Tengo Hambre = I’m hungry
• Quiero algo de comer = I’d like something to eat.
• Quiere algo comer? = Want something to eat?
• Estoy sediento = I’m thirsty
• Quiero algo de beber = I’d like something to drink.
• Quiere algo beber? = Want something to drink?
• Cuanto cuesta? = How much does this cost?

Es bueno preguntar con “por favor”, también. Preguntando sobre personas es importante ambos.

• Como se llama (ya-ma)? = “What are you called?” used as: What’s your name?
• Donde vive? = Where do you live?
• Me llamo _____. = My name is ____.
• De quien es? (deh key-en es) = Who’s is this?

Familia – Family

• Esposo/Esposa? = Husband/Wife
• Novio/Novia? = Boyfriend/Girlfriend
• (el) niño/(la) niña = (the) boy/(the) girl (Note: neen-yo/neen-ya. Nee-no is like Godfather. Watch out for that “enye” “ñ”)
• Nino = Godfather
• (el) hijo/(la) hija = The son/daughter (Note: e-ho, e-ha. The ‘h’ is silent)
• (Los) Padres = Parents
• (el) Padre/(la) Madre = (the) Father/(the) Mother
• (el) Abuelo/(la) Abuela = The grandfather/grandmother
• (el) Tio/(la) Tia = (the) Uncle/Aunt

En Español sustantivos son masculino o femenino. En Español el adjetivo “el”/”la” es masculino o femenino dependiendo en el sustantivo que está describiendo.

In Spanish nouns are masculine or feminine. In Spanish the adjective “the” is either masculine or feminine depending on the noun it is describing.
